Upstate New York Family Homestead

Honeoye Falls, New York

Dan and Beth came to us to design their new timber frame home for the high-level of personalization they were looking for, but couldn't find in a stock timber home plan. We also have a shared passion for wood and stone and craftsmanship. With three growing kids and busy work schedules, they wanted us to design useful spaces that would allow privacy and still encourage family interaction. The result is an open floor plan that keeps kitchen, great room and dining areas connected but spacially defined. There are also plenty of opportunities for time away from the hub -- each of the five bedrooms is accompanied by its own full bath. The home feels modest and comfortable, with just enough space for a pantry, wine room, and mudroom. (There's plenty of room when you consider the three story timber frame 'party' barn we raised next door, complete with second floor basketball court, balcony, and catwalk cigar room!) The exterior offers interest and texture from a variety of materials and each side is complete with its own version of a porch. All of the timbers, flooring, and built-ins were crafted with wood harvested from the Dan's forest, and all the stone from his quarry. In addition, it features all of our hand-crafted fine-woodworking from the front door, to beds, vanities, counters, cabinetry, and more. We love this home for the texture and character of the design, its mix of natural materials, its high efficiency mechanicals, and the intense craftsmanship found from the ground up. You can bet this home will become this family's homestead for many a generation.
