Some timber frame elements are for aesthetics only; they’re not supportive to the structure. Often they come in after the walls and roof are installed. We call these "crank-ups" because they get lifted into place. This type of timber framing can highlight structure in the ceiling, especially when there is high-contrast like these custom finished pieces at a private residence in the Finger Lakes.
