Recently our founder & CEO Jonathan Orpin wrote a "SPEC" editorial for our friends at Fine Homebuilding Magazine about TimberHP's new domestically manufactured wood-based insulation product TimberFill. This series is where the magazine explores new products and solutions for crafting fine homes from the perspective of respected professionals in the industry.
TimberFill is a loose fill insulation product from TimeberHP that can be blown in or dense packed for high performing, affordable, fire-resistant, and carbon negative coverage in attics, wall cavities, floors, and ceilings.
Wood-fiber insulation is a tried and trusted insulation option that has been sustainably manufactured and used in Europe for decades. The problem is that it has never been widely available or manufactured in the United States—until now.
This summer, New Energy Works received the first commercial shipment of TimberFill insulation manufactured at TimberHP's facility in Madison, Maine, which will allow us to insulate our wall, roof, and floor enclosure systems with domestically produced wood-fiber insulation, resulting in a more sustainable solution for high-performance and Passive House construction.
TimberFill is made from recycled wood chips leftover from domestic sustainable forest harvesting and lumber production. Borate is also added as a flame retardant and as protection against mold and pests. By utilizing a natural, carbon sequestering, and renewable resource like wood to produce their products, TimberHP provides builders and homeowners a cost-accessible and cost-competitive option for building more sustainable homes without the use of chemical based insulators like foam or glass.
Whether you are using dense-pack cavity insulation or attic blanket insulation to improve the thermal performance of an older home or setting out to ensure long-term energy efficiency of a new build, you can expect TimberFill to provide a long-term R-Value in the range of R13 to R60, depending on the method of installation and pack density.
Moving forward TimberHP will be selling TimberFill through a variety of channels including numerous independent lumber dealers across the Northeast.
